The British Library’s inside
web service
to Club members - a saving of £950
pa!
All technology-based businesses need to explore new ideas, track
research in their area, and keep up-to-date with the latest business
thinking. Now there is a fast, easy and efficient way to help you do
this.
With inside,
the British Library has introduced web-based access to its journal and
conference collection. inside
provides access to a comprehensive database of over 13 million articles,
covering science, engineering and business subjects as well as the arts
and humanities. The list of publications includes:
-
250,000 journal titles held by The British Library
-
20,000 current journals that can be searched at article level
-
70,000 conference proceedings that can be searched at paper level
The database is indexed back to 1993 and is kept up to date with
10,000 new records added every day. Up to 40 new journals are added to
the collection every week. It represents one of the world’s greatest
sources of knowledge.
inside provides a simple
interface, with keyword searching, current awareness, a table of
contents service, and a verification service. You search the database,
order the articles you want, and select a delivery option - all
on-screen.
inside aims to be very
cost-effective. The searching and notification services are free to
subscribers. But there has to be a charge for each article ordered to
cover copyright fees and service costs. Charges are totally transparent,
however, and each company subscriber can control its individual users by
designating their ordering privileges and budgets.
The British Library, which kindly hosted the most recent Club
meeting, generously agreed to provide free subscriptions to inside
for accredited Club members - thus saving the normal subscription fee of
£950. Each free subscription includes up to five users. Article
delivery charges will be made in accordance with inside’s
normal tariff. Details of that tariff, and other aspects of inside,
are available on the British Library’s web site at www.bl.uk/online/inside.
If your organisation is a member of the Club and would like to use
inside,
please request the special registration pack from us by e-mail to smartclub@maran.co.uk.
The registration pack will be sent by return e-mail. It is 6 pages long
and 845KB in size so it will take 3 minutes or so to download on an
ordinary connection. (It is in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) form - a copy of
Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free from www.adobe.com.) Then please
nominate an ‘Account Supervisor’ who should print the form, complete
the hard copy, sign it and post it to:
Jim Reed, London Smart Winners Club
The Well House, Rectory Lane, Pulborough RH20 2AD
The form will be endorsed to confirm membership of the Club and
forwarded to The British Library at Boston Spa. A week or so later your
Account Supervisor should receive an information pack and password
information direct from The British Library. Thereafter please direct
any enquiries to the British Library, rather than the Smart Club.
